Licensing of radiological calculations for the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant

Licensing with the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) of the radiological calculations due to the storage of 10 casks containing spent fuel for the ISFSI of the Santa María de Garoña NPP, in order to comply with instruction IS-29, which defines the dose rate limits in the limit of the controlled area of the ISFSI for its operation to be authorised.

The calculations were performed using the MAVRIC module of the SCALE package, modelling the fuel assemblies (pin by pin), the cask, the ISFSI and the topographic profile of the terrain. The total dose rate at the limiting point has been obtained from the contributions of each of the radiation sources stored in the cask, i.e. fuel photons, fuel neutrons, activation photons and secondary photons.
