Last October, the Nuclear Safety Council issued a favorable report on the execution and assembly authorization request for the Individual Temporary Storage at the Vandellòs II Nuclear Power Plant in Tarragona. This step authorizes the plant operator to begin land excavation and the construction of the necessary structures for this dry storage facility.
The Individual Temporary Storage will be located within the plant’s protected area and will have the capacity to store up to 73 HI-STORM FW containers, which are currently undergoing licensing. This facility will be crucial, as the Vandellòs II spent fuel pool is expected to reach its maximum capacity during the refueling scheduled for April 2027.
At INGECID, we are proud to have contributed to this project by developing the construction design of the storage area, as well as performing the thermal, structural, and seismic calculations for the Individual Temporary Storage structures.
This work is part of the ATI-100 project, developed by the Holtec-Ensa joint venture for Enresa, which includes the design, licensing support, manufacturing, and supply of the spent nuclear fuel storage and transport system for the nuclear power plants of Ascó, Almaraz, Cofrentes, and Vandellòs II.
At INGECID, we remain committed to engineering excellence and safety in the nuclear sector.
