We have developed an innovative mounting system for solar panels based on bridge engineering

16 October 2024

In its drive to innovate, INGECID has designed and patented a novel structure aimed at addressing the major challenges of solar energy, promoting the use of green energy. This is a suspended structure for photovoltaic utilization in unconventional urban spaces.

To tackle one of the main challenges in solar panel installation— the large area required— solar channels emerged as an option to optimize space. However, existing designs over rivers are rigid structures, significantly limited by the small span sizes.

At INGECID, we leveraged our knowledge across multiple sectors and applied an innovative approach by optimizing existing solar channel solutions with technology from a different field: bridge engineering.

The design consists of a flexible and efficient structure that allows covering large surfaces without compromising the stability or performance of the solar panels and without requiring land occupation. This allows for much wider spans than current designs, leading to a greater solar capture area and significantly increasing power output.

Moreover, INGECID has recently been granted the patent for this design, certifying the originality and value of this solution and confirming its potential to transform the renewable energy sector.

Key advantages of this system:

  • Overcoming the span size limitations in floating solar structures.
  • Lower costs compared to conventional solar channel systems.
  • Solid and safe structure, thanks to the engineering calculations performed on the support systems, cables, and other elements.
  • Aesthetically more integrated and efficient structures.

This project was one of the selected works presented at the V Ibero-American Forum on Public Procurement and Open Innovation, held in 2023 in Valencia, demonstrating its potential to transform how we integrate renewable energy into our cities.

At INGECID, we identify future challenges and develop disruptive solutions that are not only functional but also contribute to creating more sustainable urban environments.
