The project “TEC-O3 – Technological development of an equipment for the elimination of SARS- CoV-2 virus in small and medium-sized objects in homes, shops, health care and other environments, by means of a low-cost disposable disinfection chamber connected to an ozone generator calibrated with it and safeguarding the potential harmful effects of ozone on health” has received a grant co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Operational Programme Development Fund through the FEDER Operational Programme 2014-2020 of Cantabria by means of the INNOVA grant line, supporting innovation, research and product design.

The main objective of the project is the technological development of an equipment with a disposable disinfection chamber at a reduced cost, which can be purchased by the majority of the population, for the elimination of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in small and medium sized objects in homes, shops, health care and other environments, using ozone as a disinfectant, and incorporating different elements that safeguard the possible effects of ozone on human health, making the equipment totally safe and effective.

The development of the equipment includes microbiological laboratory tests to obtain with certainty the ozone concentration and exposure time necessary to eliminate the SARSCoV-2 virus under different conditions, and the elimination of other types of viruses and bacteria is also studied. These tests are carried out at the Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología de Cantabria (IBBTEC), which has biological containment level three laboratories (BSL-3), the only laboratory with this level of containment in Cantabria and one of the few in Spain.
