INGECID obtains funding from the Regional Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Tourism and Trade for the development of tools for container loading plans

The project “DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ADVANCED TOOLS FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE LOADING PLAN IN NUCLEAR CONTAINERS” has received a grant co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the FEDER Operational Programme 2014-2020 of Cantabria through the INNOVA 2019 grant line.

The nuclear energy sector is facing in the coming years, both in Spain and internationally, the end of the operating phase of many nuclear power plants, which means that they will have to be decommissioned, a highly complex process that will require significant investments in time (decades) and money. Within the framework of plant decommissioning, one of the fundamental activities is the management of spent fuel and its storage in fuel containers.

As a result of the above, the present project aims to develop advanced calculation tools that allow to quickly and efficiently establish different cask loading combinations and to instantly calculate the dose at the boundary of the controlled area, thus eliminating the current need to carry out complex calculations and reducing the current long execution times. In addition, the container loading optimisation process will enable more economically and radiologically efficient container loading processes.
